As the next in-line to fill the hereditary Chief seat for the house of Tlakishpiilth, Tyson’s cultural education began at birth. He has been raised by his family, father Shawn A-in-chut Atleo and grandfather E. Richard Umeek Atleo, to respect Nuu-chah-nulth cultural values. He is an intelligent young professional passionate about finding balance between community well-being, cultural integrity, and the health of the natural environment. Currently a student at Royal Roads University, Tyson has been employed as an Aboriginal engagement advisor to the Government of Canada for the last 7 years, winning numerous public service awards for his work. Additionally, he serves as a member of Ahousaht’s elected chief and council, is a successful entrepreneur, and a regular volunteer as a director of both the Walk the Wildside Trail and the Gathering Voices Society. In his various roles, he maintains strong connections with many accomplished cultural, political and business leaders. Tyson helps realize opportunities for communities to work towards a new legacy based on his ancestor’s guidance that is filled with optimism, opportunity and self-determination.
